Description
The Sacrament of Baptism in the Coptic Orthodox Church is considered the first and foundational sacrament among the seven holy sacraments. It is through baptism that an individual is spiritually reborn, symbolizing the death, burial, and resurrection of Christ. During the rite, the person is immersed in water three times in the name of the Holy Trinity—the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. This sacrament is essential for salvation, as Christ Himself instituted it, declaring that no one can enter the Kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit. Baptism grants the baptized person entry into the Church, allowing them to partake in the other sacraments. It is considered both a cleansing from sin and a new beginning, making the individual a member of the body of Christ. Various Old Testament symbols, such as the flood during Noah’s time and the crossing of the Red Sea, are seen as prefigurations of baptism. The sacrament’s effectiveness comes through the work of the Holy Spirit, sanctifying the water and transforming it into a medium for spiritual rebirth
